Whitaker Family YMCA Outdoor Pavilion
THE NEED FOR A PAVILION
Since opening its doors in October 2016, the Whitaker Family YMCA has played a crucial role in health and wellness in the southeastern portion of Fayette County. An important component to the Y’s offerings is Summer Day Camp. The Whitaker Family YMCA served 300 children per week at camp in 2017. Many weeks were full and the Y maintained a waitlist of children who wanted to join camp at the Whitaker Family YMCA.
The need for quality, safe and enriching summer care in the region for children was clearly evident.
The Y utilized temporary shade shelter in the form of tents as well as portable restrooms. However, those temporary accommodations do not adequately serve the kids in our care. For this reason, the Y seeks to build a 4,000-square-foot Pavilion that will incorporate bathrooms, multiple external water fountains, picnic tables, backpack storage off the ground, and much needed shade. The Pavilion will fit into the style and aesthetic of the Whitaker Family YMCA and surrounding Tuscany neighborhood as required by deed restrictions.
The new Pavilion will have a lasting impact on the surrounding community as well. The community is invited to utilize the Pavilion as a stopover during their normal course of outdoor exercise, much like how the Pavilion at the North Lexington Family YMCA is utilized for runners, walkers and bikers. Whitaker Family YMCA members are also invited to utilize the Pavilion outside of summer day camp hours as it is in close proximity to our outdoor splash pad.
Construction of the Pavilion will begin in fall 2017 with a goal of completion prior to the start of summer camp at the end of May 2018.
ABOUT SUMMER CAMP
The YMCA of Central Kentucky provides summer camp enrichment opportunities to children throughout our community each year and in 2017 we served a little over 2,000 children across the organization. At the Y, camp is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. Few environments are as special as camp or more impactful to a child. This is where kids learn how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities. Camp provides character building and leadership opportunities in the midst of the fun of sports, theater, games, outdoor adventure, talent shows and meaningful new friendships.
Summer Camp is thoughtfully planned by the Y’s youth development leadership team to incorporate crucial learning opportunities for our kids. In addition to the typical fun activities we offer, children participating at the Y’s camps go on weekly field trips to further expand their minds and social skills. The Y also applies an educational curriculum so that each day, campers are learning in the midst of their daily fun.
Did you know that the Y is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve the community through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all – regardless of background, lifestyle or economic status? Each year, we raise over $1 million in charitable donations to make it possible for children, families, seniors, neighbors and others to benefit from Y programs and membership, regardless of their financial circumstances. The crucial funds raised through the Annual Giving Campaign make programs like camp accessible to children and families that they would not have otherwise.
