Kids Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 26

Published 08.06.18 5:00 am

The YMCA of Central Kentucky’s fourteenth annual Kids Triathlon, sponsored by White, Greer and Maggard Orthodontics and Wildcat Moving will be held Sunday, Aug. 26, at the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA, located at 3251 Beaumont Centre Circle in Lexington for kids, ages 6-14. The race will consist of three events – swimming, biking and running and begins promptly at 7:30 a.m.

“This event is a great opportunity to introduce your child to a new sport, encourages a healthy lifestyle at an early age and gives kids a sense of accomplishment,” said Jay Ingle, father of two of this year’s participants, Murphy (10) and Holman (7). “I’ve heard it said many times that less than 1 percent of people complete a triathlon. The kids that do this event join that group.”

Registration must be completed in advance at ymcacky.org/kidstriathlon (before Aug. 24) or in person at any YMCA of Central Kentucky location. Cost is $45 per child.

Each participant will receive a race packet, which includes a race shirt, bib, safety pins and post-race refreshment and snack. Registration packets may be picked up from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, or 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 25, at the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA. Race day check-in will be between 6-7 a.m. and a mandatory pre-race meeting for parents and kids will be held at 7:10 a.m. Race segments, by age, include:

  • 6 to 8-year-olds: Swim 50 yards; bike 1 mile; run ½ mile.
  • 9 to 10-year-olds: Swim 100 yards; bike 3 miles; run 1 mile.
  • 11 to 12-year-olds: Swim 200 yards; bike 5 miles; 1 ½ miles.
  • 13 to 14-year-olds: Swim 200 yards; bike 5 miles; run 1 ½ miles.

10-year-old Murphy Ingle likes to make sure she compares the number of triathlons she has completed to her father. “She is ahead 4-2 right now. I am proud of what she has set out to do,” Ingle added. This will be Murphy’s third YMCA Triathlon and Holman’s first. “Holman signed up for the triathlon and hadn’t even learned to ride a bike yet. He is already up to 2 miles in his training and can’t wait to participate in the event.”
