13th Annual Kids Triathlon on Aug. 27

Published 08.16.17 6:00 am

The 13th Annual Kids Triathlon, sponsored by White, Greer and Maggard Orthodontics will be held on Sunday, Aug. 27 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA, located at 3251 Beaumont Centre Circle in Lexington for kids, ages 6-14. The race will consist of three events – swimming, biking and running.

Janine Barnett, a 15-year member at YMCA of Central Kentucky and mother of three said, “After my boys watched me complete my first sprint triathlon four-years ago, they became very interested in trying a triathlon themselves. Our older two boys have done it for the last three-years, and our youngest son completed his first YMCA triathlon last year! It is truly a testament to the YMCA's mission of building strong (and healthy!) individuals, families and communities. Every race morning, we have been amazed and inspired by the number of kids who commit themselves to this endeavor.”

Registration must be completed in advance, either at ymcacky.org (before Aug. 24) or in person at any YMCA of Central Kentucky location. Cost is $45 per child.

Race day check-in is 6:15 to 7 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27; a mandatory pre-race meeting for parents and kids will be held at 7:10 a.m. Participants will receive race packets, which include a race shirt, bib, safety pins and swim cap. Registration packets may be picked up from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 or 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 26 at the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA.

The triathlon begins promptly at 7:30 a.m.

Race segments, by age, include:

  • 6 to 8-year-olds: Swim 50 yards; bike one-mile; run half-mile.

  • 9 to 10-year-olds: Swim 100 yards; bike three-miles; run one-mile.

  • 11 to 12-year-olds: Swim 200 yards; bike five-miles; one and a half miles.

  • 13 to 14-year-olds: Swim 200 yards; bike five-miles; run one and a half miles.

“I really enjoy the people who help me along the way… those that cheer me on… it helps to give me confidence!” said Michael Barnett. “Practice the transitions (like tying your shoes) so you can get the race done faster!” Barnett added.
