The YMCA of Central Kentucky will host the Whitaker Family YMCA at Hamburg Place ribbon cutting ceremony Monday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. Help us celebrate the grand opening of our state-of-the-art facility, which is now a reality after 10 year in the making!

“We have an opportunity to enhance the quality of life in our community,” said YMCA of Central Kentucky president and CEO David Martorano. “At the Whitaker Family YMCA, you can be assured that whatever activity your family or your child engages in – from after school to family time to sports to camp – you’ll have a safe, positive environment to play, learn and grow.”

More than a year ago at the Hamburg facility’s groundbreaking ceremony in the summer of 2015, some of Lexington’s most notable residents including Mayor Jim Gray stood on bare ground over what would one day become Central Kentucky’s newest YMCA facility. They predicted the new Y would become one of the most well-attended and proactive facilities in Kentucky.

Over a year later, and we are ready to unveil the Whitaker Family YMCA, which will serve the Hamburg area by emphasizing the Y’s dedication to healthy living and building strong communities.

The 62,000-square-foot Whitaker Family YMCA will include a 10,000-square-foot wellness center, a youth development wing, an indoor aquatic complex, an outdoor splash pad, three studios for group exercise classes, a multi-functional wellness area, a full-size gymnasium and a three-lane walking/running track.

“The Whitaker family encourages the health of our state. While we work to add stability to the financial health of our state, our family is focused on the balance that is achieved through healthy spirit, mind and body,” said Elmer K. Whitaker, CEO at Whitaker Bank, whose dedication of time and resources to the Hamburg Y led to the official renaming process. “The YMCA shares this passion, so we are proud to contribute to the programs that will encourage each of us, as Kentuckians, to be our best.”

Earlier in 2015, Whitaker Bank financed a portion of the Y’s planned $36.7 million in capital improvements. The capital projects include the new Whitaker Family YMCA, an expansion at the North Lexington Family YMCA, redevelopment of the High Street YMCA, and renovations at the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA.
