YMCA Special Needs Sports
At the Y, we strive to be inclusive and to provide programs for all kids. Our Special Needs Sports program provides opportunities for fun and physical activity for youth and teens with special needs. Whether you're a beginner, a seasoned athlete, or just want to have fun, we encourage you to explore our special needs sports programs. Supported by staff and volunteers, individuals are encouraged to strive for their personal best.
We offer different sports throughout the year. Currently, we are offering registration for: JUMP START BASKETBALL
Jump Start Basketball is our special needs basketball program. It is for children 5-21 and is played at the North Lexington YMCA in the winter months. League uses lowered goals and smaller balls to ensure each child has the ability score and the opportunity to bring the ball up court. We play a zone defense with defenders required to keep one foot in the key at all times.
Buddies are assigned to each player. Their jobs are to assist and protect the players during the games and to interact and communicate with their player to let them know of his or her responsibilities. They are not to make contact with opposing players when avoidable, but they may provide a passive screen to assist their players on offense (i.e. to help them attempt a shot). Buddies and coaches may help facilitate the offense by “stepping” into the game from time to time if needed.
The goal of the program is to provide a positive physical education/recreation program and environment for special needs children that is fun and conducive for skill development.
